Insulation Grants: An Overview

As part of the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT), funding for domestic insulation was put in place to ensure the UK meets its statutory carbon reduction targets. It aims to cut carbon emissions by ensuring that every household in the UK is as energy efficient as possible. By helping home owners insulate their loft or cavity walls, the energy saved will help the Government reduce overall carbon emissions for the UK, in line with European targets.

Funding

Funding for the insulation grant scheme is provided by UK Energy Suppliers with more than 50,000 customers (domestic households), these are British Gas, NPower, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power and Scottish & Southern Energy. You do not need to be a customer of these companies in order to receive a grant. Read more…

Applying for an insulation grant

  1. Answer the three questions at the top of every page of this web site. This will assess how much of a grant you are eligible for.
  2. Next, fill in your contact details and provide any additional information you’d like to provide, e.g. “I am applying on behalf of someone else”, “my loft was insulated around 10 years ago but now needs topping up”, “please only call after 6pm” etc.
  3. Based on all the details you’ve entered so far, we will assess the most suitable insulation contractor in our network to contact you, based on your location and grant eligibility. All of our insulation contractors are approved, professional and very highly rated.
  4. The contractor will contact you at the time you’ve specified to discuss the information you’ve entered. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about cavity wall grants, loft insulation grants, installation etc, and explain the whole process to you. If you choose, you can then arrange for a free survey of your home to ensure that it is suitable to receive either cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, or both.
  5. If you have opted to do so, the contractor will visit your property to assess it’s suitability for receiving the insulation. They will carry out their assessment based on the property’s location, wall construction, access to loft space, susceptibility to harsh weather conditions, any signs of damp, and more.
  6. The contractor will then notify you of the outcome of the survey. If you qualify for a 50% grant and the survey is successful, you will then be able to arrange for the work to be carried out. This can usually be arranged within 7 days, but depends on the schedule of the insulation company. If you qualify for the full 100% grant, the current waiting time is around 3 months, but this depends on your location. The contractor will be able to give you a more precise estimate.

Insulation grants for private landlords

As the landlord of a property (or properties), you can apply for an insulation grant on behalf of your tenant for cavity wall and/or loft insulation. It is the occupier of a property who will qualify for the grant, however you can still apply on their behalf.

If your tenant is on benefits, or are over 70, there is nothing to pay and you can insulate your property for free. If these do not apply to your tenant, then a cost of around £200 will apply for either loft insulation or cavity wall insulation. Technically, as the occupier of the property, the tenant is responsible for this cost. However, there is no legal obligation for them to do so, and so this may fall upon the landlord.

There are many benefits to installing insulation in your tenanted properties.

  • Your property becomes more desirable to both future tenants and buyer.
  • Tax benefits exist to help you fund the cost of insulation, if applicable.
  • The insulation grant is based on your tenants circumstances, not yours.
  • Cavity wall insulation will last for a minimum of 40 years.
  • Helps to increase the value of your property.

How to apply for an insulation grant for your property.

Complete our insulation grant calculator with your tenant’s details. This will give you an indication of the grant your tenant is eligible for. On the next page, continue to enter your name and contact details, but you must enter the postcode of the property you are applying for. If you are looking to insulate several properties, follow the steps above for each property you wish to apply for.

If your property(ies) is currently untenanted, fill in the form for yourself, but again use the postcode of the property you wish to insulate.

Can I apply for an insulation grant on behalf of someone else?

Yes! If a relative or friend could benefit from insulation for their home, but are unable to apply for an insulation grant themselves, you can take of this on their behalf. They will be required to sign some documents to prove they reside at the address in question, but everything else can be done by you.

What’s the first step?

You firstly need to contact a company who can assess the suitability of their home for receiving either cavity wall or loft insulation. We can take of this for you and fast-track your application to the relevant company near you. Just fill in the form at the top of this page and enter your details in the form on the results page.

Important! When entering your details, ensure that you enter the postcode of the home receiving the insulation work. The remaining contact details can be your own. It would also be helpful to include a brief note in the comments box to state that you are applying on behalf of someone else. No further details are needed at this point.
